July Newsletter
Beautiful friends and subscribers welcome to July! A cracker of a newsletter this month featuring our very own singer songwriter extraordinaire Annie Cheevers, Teddy the dog and a love letter in beer form to our former colleague and much loved friend Diego who recently headed back home to Costa Rica. As I write this the sun is shining, my Polly is tasting delicious and I've a full day of enjoying pints around Limerick ahead of me so I'll leave this here.
Much love and see you all soon on Thomas St,
Jono
Beer of the Month
Summer has seen a lot of our favourites on the board, as we've been rattling though the sporadic sunshines, but couple of bits to show off.
Cubic Tortoise, big hazy IPA was released, a spiritual successor to beloved Cubic Turtle. We tried a slightly different malt bill with this one, so it's a little darker in colour, but just as delicious, and has legs instead of flippers (or something like that, ask Attenborough) Pineapple, mango, melon, citrus juicy juice.
La cerveza del mes es "Pura Vida" por nuestro ex empleado, Diego. Te extrañamos hermano! Beautiful hazy New England style pale ale. Lots of pineapple and citrus with some coconut and floral notes. Diego brought joy to all our lives for the months that he lived and worked in Limerick, and hopefully this ale brings a little joy to your evening. Pura Vida amigos, y nos vemos pronto Diego. Xx
Humans of Crew
Every month Eloise will be chatting to some of the amazing people who pass through our door. This month, Eloise talked to “There she is” Cheevers.
Annie Cheevers is a Musician from Boston that has taken up residence in our fine town of Limerick. She joined our Crew crew almost a year ago and has been entertaining us with her endless quotes and soundtracking our shifts. We sat down to have a catch-up on her time in Ireland so far…
Tell our readers about yourself.
About me, I'm an American gal. I am a musician that moved to Ireland about, so strange, but almost two years ago now. I dunno if I told you this before, but I moved initially to study environmental policy.
Yes, you had studied it for your undergrad?
Yes and that was the plan. I was supposed to go to UCD to do an M.A. and I put a down payment for environmental policy and then changed my mind last minute to move to Limerick to do music.
How did you go from UCD to Limerick?
UCD was one of seven schools that I applied to for a masters, which was the heftiest task. All for environmental policy or global development. I was initially moving to Manchester and then chose Dublin, and then had this little bit of a panic before I went because I had been doing music seriously for a year or two. I just knew all of that was going to be on pause for a while and I had felt like I was really starting to get somewhere. I was writing more. So I looked up music programs around Ireland and I came across the Limerick one, which was the M.A. in songwriting and it was all production and composition, stuff like that. And then I got an interview and it was one of the best interviews I've ever had in my life. I actually cried after. It just felt like a conversation where I was talking about all different types of music and my journey which I feel like before then, I hadn't articulated. It was just such a beautiful conversation and I had this feeling, I got hit with a wave of emotion after, all in a good way. I just thought, that was it. I was hoping to get it and I found out the next day that I got it.
What are you up to now you’re finished the Masters?
Now I work at Music Gen and I still work at home in Boston with the guy that I initially worked with for my EP. I've spent the year writing a lot more and experimenting with different sounds that are not what I would normally write.
What are your musical influences?
Oh my god, I’ve so many. They change all the time, but I think my OG influences are always Sinead O'Connor, Neko Case, Beth Orton, Cat Power, Sharon Van Etten and Kate Bush. All the ethereal gals are my OG’s. I still love traditional songwriting. I think I always will. But songwriting and arrangement, I'm feeling a calling for different types of music as I've started to listen to different artists and I think it is coming into the stuff that I'm making now and will hopefully record soon. I have fallen in love with so many Irish artists since I moved here. So many like Katie Kim and Elaine Howley. I don't know what's in the water here, but it's out of this world. Those are my early influences that stay with me and now I'm getting exposed to different types of music and seeing how it pops up in my stuff, which I think I'm still figuring out.
Do you find that environment is a factor in what’s changing your work? You started in Boston and have travelled and now find yourself in Limerick or is it just you growing and changing as a person?
I think both. I actually came to Ireland in 2021 for a music festival because I loved so many different styles. I ended up finding many different artists then, I feel like I always had my ear to the streets for Irish bands I really loved. Pillow Queens, Bitch Falcon. It’s so hard to know because I’m still in an experimental phase and am hopefully working on some demos when I go home over the Summer. I think production wise, I’m definitely inspired by a lot of the bands I’m hearing around here, and want to put some of those soundscapes in my own stuff.
Which do you prefer, a Spuckie or a Chicken Roll?
*Spuckies are a very common name for an Italian Sub in Boston*
Chicken Roll 100%. I just started getting into them and I see, I get the buzz now.
What do you put on it?
I like everything spicy so I’ll do spicy chicken, jalopeños, lettuce. What else? I like those marinated red peppers and tomatoes. Add cheese, Mayo.
You do a fancy Chicken Roll.
Yeah, I know. So I’ve been really into those.
Dogs of Crew
Welcome to our monthly Doggo of Crew interview. This month, we speak to the wonderful Teddy
Tell us a little bit about yourself!
Hello to all my lovely friends, my name is Ted/Teddy or my personal preference, Theodore the first, as I am a VERY important person around town! (Mace even keep a sausage for me behind the deli) Not many others have that privilege!!
How did you get your name?
I'm not sure what my name was before my personal assistant (my mam) rescued me. One very cold day 7 and a half years ago when I was very small my mam was in college (pretending to be intelligent). That day she couldn't find her lecture hall (as I said, not the brightest), and as she was walking around I ran into her feet!. My mam could see I was very small and had not been treated very well, I was very under weight, had fleas and worms and my hair was all in dreadlocks....(I rocked them though)!
As I was so fluffy when I was small my mam picked (the very generic) name Teddy! But people call me Theodore as I am very regal!. Although when I'm being really naughty my mam calls me different names 🤔!
What are your favourite hobbies?
My favourite hobbies are running away from my mam in the park. She chases me and sounds like Corey Taylor from slipknot behind me!
I love jumping into strangers cars, I even got into a Garda car once, they found it funny but mam's face was very purple. I love going to school at @trailsandtails to see my friends. I'm meant to run around but my favourite thing to do is roll around in fox poop! Jamie and Sarah always ruin it by washing me and getting the lovely smell off me! My ultimate favourite hobby is rolling and eating disgusting things in the park (especially after I get groomed). I love my aunty Dee because she lets me intensely lick her leg and feeds me ham so I stand at her door (even when she isn't home) just waiting for the ham lady to appear. My best friend is Kai, we walk together everyday! We like to play a game of who can pee on eachothers head the most, As you can see from the photo we find it funny...our mams don't
What's your favourite thing about Crew?
I love going to crew because I like to go to every single person who is minding their own business and stare into their face until I get rubs off them and also lick any of their skin on show!
Tell us a fun fact to finish us off!
A fun fact about me is that sometimes I like to work on the till at maxizoo and provide myself with unlimited treats! I think I should get employee of the month...every month!
Thanks to everyone who subscribes and reads these newsletters every month. We wouldn't be here without you; can't wait for more craic, chats, and pints this coming month.
Cheers! 🍺
